Center, initiated in 2012. In 2023, 20 solar panels of 405 W each (with a capacity of 8.1kW/h conventional were added to the roof. Roof Installations in 2013 Roof Installations in 2023 On the ground, we find: *16 bifacial panels of 545W each (capacity of 8.72kW/h), with 1 axis of rotation *16 bifacial panels of 545W each (capacity of 8.72kW/h), with 2 axes of rotation *16 bifacial panels of 545W each (capacity of 8.72kW/h) According to tests undertaken with bifacial panels (which can capture the sun’s rays on both sides) attached to the ground, they can create 11 to 23% more energy than their single-sided counterparts. The system is oriented towards the geographic south. The images below show the bifacial panels. The pivoting panels are equipped with wind and light sensors, as well as an automatic snow removal function. According to the manufacturer, pivoting solar panels can obtain an average efficiency of 42.9% higher than that of a fixed support system. In case of snow, the panels automatically rotate horizontal to accelerate recently fallen snow. The light sensor allows the panels to follow the sun to capture as many solar rays as possible, while the wind sensor tells the panels to move into a horizontal position. The motor is used to rotate the panels in the event of excessive wind or snow accumulation on the panels. Lire plusOpen-Sky Co-operative Solar ArrayOpenSky’s new building is now net-zero, and will be able to also support the energy uses of their barn and the garden shed where they use other tools with the energy created by the array. Laura Hunter, Executive Director of Open Sky Co-operative, a charity that serves neurodivergent youth, spoke with EOS Eco-Energy about a recently installed a solar array atop Open Sky’s Baker Space building. The new building is now net-zero, and Open Sky will be able to also support the energy uses of their barn and the garden shed and various tools thanks to the energy created by the array. Laura Hunter says that Open Sky is happy to be part of greening the grid. Lire plusBill Johnstone Memorial Park solar array (12kW)The Bill Johnstone Memorial Park solar array (12 kW) was installed by Vertex Solar Solutions on November 12, 2022. In 2023, they produced a total of 12,670 kWh. At 0.3 kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalent per kWh, this solar array reduced Tantramar’s emissions by approximately 3,800 kilograms in 2023. The Vertex Solar team poses after installing the Bill Johnstone Memorial Park Solar Array The 12kW system will supply 72% of the Bill Johnstone Memorial Activity Center’s annual electricity, with approximately 15,346 kWh of solar electricity used per year. The solar system will reduce emissions by 315 tonnes of carbon dioxide and help the municipality significantly lower utility costs for the building. Below is a screenshot of the monthly kWh data from the AP Systems site. Lire plusPort Elgin Regional School In September 2023, twenty-four ground mounted 450 watt panels were installed. The panels have concrete footings and are placed at a 45-degree angle to capture maximum sunlight. The panels will power a geothermal heating system for the 30 x 60 ft greenhouse, allowing the school to grow vegetables with renewable energy for the school cafeteria, culinary classes and the local food bank. The project is sponsored by PEDVAC, a non-profit community group located at 12 Church Street, Port Elgin, NB. The system is south-facing toward the rear of the school, near the food forest. Fundy Solar began the installation in early summer 2023 after the permits from NB Power were approved. Wheeler electric made the official electrical connections. The system was hooked up to a net meter and became operational in early fall. Net metering allows any additional power generated by the panels to go back into the grid and create credits that the school can use in the winter. The long-term plan is to make the solar system off-grid so that the greenhouse can be powered even during power outages from winter storms.
